The first time I visited Halkadiki in Greece was when Rocco was nine months old, it was one of our first family holidays. We stayed in the Sani Asteria suites which showcased a fabulous double bedroom, living area and open plan bathroom – perfect for couples with kids.
We had such an amazing experience that we decided to book the same resort this year. So on 30th June 2016 we headed to our Greek destination, airport attire ready, passports packed, boarding cards printed and four suitcases in tow!
The Sani Resort is voted one of the top family holiday destinations in the world. The five star resort boasts four beautiful hotel locations; The Sani Club which is discrete and refined, The Sani Beach which is lavish and vibrant, Porto Sani which is relaxed and elegant and the Sani Asteria which is exclusive and intimate.
This year we decided to stay at the Sani Beach to have closer access to the sea, sand and amazing views of the resort. The private port is only walking distance from the beach which is surrounded by over 15 restaurants, designer boutiques and chartered yachts for those looking for a marina adventure.
Our flight was only a mere three hours long, even though I was a bit nervous flying nearly 7 months pregnant and with a two year old but it was swift with us having speeding boarding and Rocco slept for the majority of the flight. I loaded his little trunkie with snacks, drinks and toys to keep him occupied when he woke, and within no time we arrived at Thessaloniki airport. The transfer is about 45-50 minutes to the resort with car seats provided.
Upon arriving at the resort with our friends from Leeds and their two kids we checked in and headed straight for the pool for some sunbathing which was followed by lunch at at fabulous Greek restaurant overlooking the sea. The views were insane, simply breathtaking.
The resort was fully booked weeks before we arrived, so it is advised to book both lunch and dinner reservations for the for duration of your stay to avoid not getting in anywhere. We had the help of our fabulous concierge George who booked us into a variety of different fine dining restaurants for the adults and some more child friendly venues for family dining.
All the children were booked into the Melissa Mini Club, which again was booked out before the season was open! The UK OFSTED childcare creche and kids club is ran by English speaking assistants with a 3:1 children to carer ratio. The company is owned by the Worldwide Kids Company who have facilities in other 5 star resorts around the world, such as Dubai, Antigua, Croatia, Corfu and Crete. They were booked in 10am-1pm every day free of charge, and took advantage of activities such as picnics of the beach, dodgeball, arts, crafts, singing, dancing and kids disco’s on an evening. It not only gave the children more stimulation, but it gave us adults quality time every day to do our own thing. It made the holiday so much more relaxing.
Afternoons were spent playing with them in the pool, having lunch, walks on the beach and naps for the tired little bambinos. By the time dinner came around, we were refreshed, recharged and ready to spend more quality time as a family drinking and dining. The restaurants on the Port, and in the other parts of the resort were an eclectic mix of Italian, Greek, Modern British, Mexican, Thai and Japanese so much to choose from and take advantage of.
Towards the final days of the holiday, the boys surprised us all with a private dining reservation on the private beach with our own chef and waiter. It was the perfect setting and the kids loved it. We even had a docking station so we ended up having our own little disco on the beach. We were the only family to request this since the resort opened, so the boys did very well. It was an experience to remember forever.
I made sure I hit the gym a few times to compensate for all the amazing food I was indulging in, and on the last day of the holiday I booked myself into the spa for a few beauty treatments. I emerged over 2 hours later feeling totally recharged and refreshed. In fact I fell asleep during my facial!
Soon it was ready to check out and head back to the airport for our final flight back home to Manchester. I am not the best flyer. I have suffered from flight anxiety ever since I had Rocco, so after a two hour delay and not been able to land for 45 minutes due to no landing space on the runway, I was a nervous wreck. Rocco decided not to sleep this time and had both me and Paul pacing up and down the plane trying to keep him occupied, so it was a testing journey home to say the least.
After arriving back in sunny Manchester and getting back to normality, holiday blues has kicked it and I cant wait to go back there again next year. It is the best family holiday we have had, 5 star service from start to finish. The staff could not be more accommodating and welcoming, and the scenic views just get me every time. Halkadiki I will miss you…!
