Worsley’s Wonder

February has become one of my favourite months of the year, not only because its a short month after a drawn out January, but its Valentine’s Day! Two years ago on Valentines day Paul proposed to me in a little ice church at the Ice Hotel in Iceland so I’ll always hold amazing memories of this time of the year.

With Valentines Day falling on a Thursday this year, we decided to celebrate early and book a Friday night out kiddy-free to a new restaurant we hadn’t tried. I came across George’s in Worsely a few years ago and always wanted to dine there. It was a fair drive from Heaton Moor, but we like to venture out to new places that aren’t always in the city centre. The restaurant is named after architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, one the most famous architects of the Victorian era. He lived and worked in the village between 1844-1846. The owners are childhood school friends Ryan Giggs, Kevin Gregory and Bernie Taylor, who with Head Chef Joe McLeod have produced a comforting gastro dining venue of modern meets contemporary.

We arrived at the venue to a bustling restaurant and were taken to our table with a great view of the dining room. I am a self confessed people watcher so being given the best seat in the house was a big green tick!

The authentic building is juxtaposed with a modern twist and warm romantic lighting. The sound of chatter and people having a good time oozes throughout the restaurant. The menu is Modern British with a few hints South American and European flavours.

I ordered my obligatory glass of prosecco and a starter of edamame beans (£3.95), forever my favourite dish on any menu. Paul ordered the duo pork lollipops (£9.50) which I must admit I was a little envious of when it arrived. It was served with a delicate scattering of pork scratchings and bacon toffee jam. The combination of all three textures and flavours was immense, one of the best starters I have ever tasted.

   

I also ordered the sea bass ceviche (£8.95), an old favourite of mine from when I used to work as the PR Manager at Gaucho restaurants nearly six years ago. A South American delicacy, a ceviche is raw fish marinated in lemon juice, the acid slightly ‘cooks’ the fish and gives it a tangy, zesty flavour. This dish was served with a granita, orange and pink grapefruit, the perfect palette cleanser after my edamame beans.

We must have been really in the mood for a fish feast, not so romantic, but for our main meal I ordered the Ginger and Soy Salmon (£15.95) which was the perfect portion size for me, with a garnish of kholrabi and butternut squash. It was delicate, full of flavour and beautifully presented. Paul ordered traditional fish and chips, always a winner for him, which was lightly battered haddock, served with mushy peas and tartre sauce, and fries of course.

   

Our dining experience wouldn’t have been complete without a dessert of stick toffee pudding, with two spoons for sharing! The light texture of the cake, sweet toffee sauce and smooth ice cream was enough to put me in a loved up, cosy food coma, while we sat back and listened to the live music playing in the bar area.

The menu showcases an array of different dishes to suit everyone’s palate. The welcoming ambience of George’s will guarantee us going back again, but next time I will be making sure I take advantage of the Sunday roast and a few glasses of Malbec!
